End Child Poverty demands Government action in light of new Joseph Rowntree Foundation research
Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s latest research demonstrates the urgent need to provide support for the poorest families at such a tough financial time. The Campaign to End Child Poverty is calling on the Government to keep its promise to invest £3 billion in child poverty in the budget, and help kick start the economy.
The coalition of 150 children’s charities and other organisations, which is campaigning to ensure the Government meets its 2010 target to halve child poverty, said that supporting families on low incomes should be an essential part of Gordon Brown’s economic recovery plan.
Hilary Fisher, Director of End Child Poverty, said: “The recession makes it more important that the Government keep its promise to halve child poverty by 2010. This kind of investment will not only improve the lives of millions of children. It will also have a positive impact on the economy as poor families are able to spend on the things their children need. Far from being a luxury for good times, investing in children should be seen as an essential part of our economic recovery.”
