Commenting on today’s announcement by the Department for Children, Schools and Families that £18 million will be made available over the next three years to reduce the risk of accidents at home, Hilary Fisher, Director of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, said:
“The Home Safety Equipment scheme is welcome news for many of the 3.8 million of children currently living in poverty in the UK. Poor children are five times more likely to die in an accident and 15 times more likely to die in a fire at home than children from better off families. This scheme will help to eliminate the post code lottery that currently exists in some parts of the country and help some of our most vulnerable families reduce the risk of accidental injuries at home.”
