Investment in today’s PBR for families with children will provide some support for poor children in the UK but much more will be needed to reach the Government’s own 2010 target to halve child poverty.
Director Hilary Fisher said: “Today the Chancellor had a real chance to improve the lives of the 3.9 million children from low income families living in poverty who are struggling every day with the increase in prices on food and fuel but sadly he did not go far enough.”
"10,000 members of the public came along to End Child Poverty's recent rally in Trafalgar square to urge the government to keep the promise to halve child poverty by 2010. The target is achievable, yet today's pre-budget review was a missed opportunity and much will have to be done in budget 2009.”
“Putting into law the commitment to eradicate child poverty by 2020 is good news but we need to see a redoubling of efforts to deliver the investment needed to meet the 2010 target, the foundation for this legislation. Time is running out.”
The members and supporters of the Campaign to End Child Poverty will continue to put pressure on the government to keep its child poverty promise.
